Jan 14 2014
A book club and social event for the whole family: older siblings, younger siblings, parents, grandparents. The 3rd Friday of each month we’ll watch a movie based on a children’s book and discuss the differences. How did the plot or characters change? Were the settings as described in the book? Do you understand or agree with the choices the filmmakers made?
Since this book club is in the evening, it will also be an optional casual potluck gathering. Bring enough of any dish or drink for your own group and a couple of others, and there should be plenty for everyone. Spellbound will supply plates, napkins, cups, etc.
Friday, January 17th at 6:00pm
Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers vs. “Mary Poppins” (1964, Disney)
A classic book and a classic (Oscar-winning) movie, this is a great example of how a story can change when being translated to film. With all the buzz about the new film “Saving Mr. Banks,” which tells the behind-the-scenes story of Walt Disney convincing author P.L. Travers to let him film her beloved book, this seems like a practically perfect place to start our new club.
