Spellbound

At the May meeting of the ROYAL Book Club (Readers of Young Adult Literature), we’ll be discussing Return to Sender by Julia Alvarez. Book club selections are 20% off at Spellbound through the date of the meeting. Anyone 18 and over is welcome to attend; no RSVP necessary. Come alone or bring a friend!

After Tyler’s father is injured in a tractor accident, his family is forced to hire migrant Mexican workers to help save their Vermont farm from foreclosure. Tyler isn’t sure what to make of these workers. Are they undocumented? And what about the three daughters, particularly Mari, the oldest, who is proud of her Mexican heritage but also increasingly connected her American life. Her family lives in constant fear of being discovered by the authorities and sent back to the poverty they left behind in Mexico. Can Tyler and Mari find a way to be friends despite their differences?
In a novel full of hope, but no easy answers, Julia Alvarez weaves a beautiful and timely story that will stay with readers long after they finish it.

Author Allan Wolf will read from his novel in verse Zane’s Trace, winner of the North Carolina Young Adult Book Award and newly available in paperback for $7.99. 

 The book is narrated by a troubled teen who believes he can control the outcome of events by writing on his bedroom walls.  Wolf will read from the book and share the story of how he discovered the power of words by writing on his own bedroom walls as a kid.  Complete with photographs.  Q & A and book signing to follow. 

Wolf’s novel and his presentation are both meant for tweens, teens, and adults.  Content may not be appropriate for children under ten years of age. 

In honor of Zane Guesswind, the book’s narrator, we will be giving away Sharpie markers and serving his favorite refreshments (Mountain Dew and Pop Tarts).
