Art with Heart Valentine Art Workshop

A joint event brought to you by Spellbound, ZaPow, and the Asheville Parks, Rec & Cultural Arts Department.
The Easel Rider Mobile Arts Lab will be parked in front of the store and local professional artists will be on hand to help kids create their own fabulous valentine art, be it old school valentine cards or whatever they can think of. (Please note: this will be a very “boy-friendly” event, per one of our art instructors!)

Kids can have their work featured on the front gallery wall along with the ZaPow artists’ “Art with Heart Show”  or they can take their art home with them.

A WRINKLE IN TIME 50th Anniversary Party
Celebrate this landmark book with a party that will include viewing of a bookstore-only event live streaming from NYC featuring readings by celebrity authors, including Rebecca Stead (author of the Newbery-winning When You Reach Me, an homage to Wrinkle) and Asheville native Hope Larson, whose graphic novel adaptation of Wrinkle comes out this fall.

Lots of cool giveaways and door prizes, refreshments, and more. Free.

Spellbound is leaving our Wall Street location after the end of the year and will be open for business at 21 Battery Park Avenue beginning February 1st, 2012.

More than just a simple move, this also marks the beginning of a beautiful friendship between two businesses. Spellbound will now be located within ZaPOW!, the brand-new comics and illustration art gallery on Battery Park.

Much like our arrangement on Wall Street with Alisha Silver Photography, starting in February Spellbound and ZaPOW will be two separate businesses sharing the same space. In this case, however, the two businesses are more directly complementary, the integration will be more seamless, and we will be in a larger, brighter space that will be more accommodating for in-store events of all sizes. We are already brainstorming with Lauren and Matt, ZaPOW’s owners, planning lots of fun joint events for kids, teens, and adults–so stay tuned for more information about events in our next newsletter.

We will be open for business at 19 Wall Street through the end of 2011. Below are answers to some (anticipated) Frequently Asked Questions. Feel free to contact us by phone, email, Facebook, or Twitter with any other questions.

Moving FAQ

Why are you moving?
Good question! The simplest answer is that, as much as we love Wall Street, our landlords, and our business neighbors, there is a lot more foot (and vehicle) traffic on Battery Park. We were offered a chance to move to a better location that will actually cost us less, so we jumped at it! Also, the folks at ZaPOW are fabulous and we think that this partnership will be very positive for both our businesses and, most importantly, for our customers.

When are you moving?
We will be open for business at the 19 Wall Street location through the end of December 2011. We will be closed the entire month of January. We will re-open for business inside ZaPOW beginning Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

Where exactly on Battery Park can we find you?
Just go in the entrance for the ZaPOW gallery at 21 Battery Park Avenue. We will have signage to guide you. For those who like landmarks, ZaPOW is located near the Grove Arcade, between the Subway sandwich shop and Blitzkrieg Games, across the street from Chai Pani.

Will your store hours change?
Yes! Our store hours will be the same as ZaPOW’s. As of February 1, that means:

Fri 12-10pm
Sat 11-10pm
Sun 1-6pm

There is a chance that these hours may expand at some point–we will let you know about any changes a.s.a.p.

Are you having a moving sale?
Why, yes we are! Monday December 26 – Saturday December 31 we will be open 11am-6pm and will have a huge Post-Holiday/Moving Sale. Everything will be on sale, and many books and other items will be 40% off!

However, we will not be getting in new stock after Christmas in the Wall Street location, so come early in the week for the best selection.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Archie Comics, Spellbound welcomes Nancy Silberkleit, Co-CEO of Archie Comics, on Saturday December 17th from 2 to 4pm.

Nancy will conduct a Creating Comics workshop for kids and adults (RSVPs appreciated). Please be here no later than 2:15 to participate in the workshop. We expect the workshop to last approximately 30 minutes.

After the comics workshop, Nancy will also give a talk about her experiences as a female CEO in the comics industry. She has been profiled in Fortune magazine. As a former teacher and a female CEO, Miss Silberkleit’s speaking platform is an inspiration to women who want to succeed in business and teachers who want to empower students to be self motivators and creators.

This will be really fun event for comics fans of all ages. Nancy will be happy to sign Archie books that are purchased at this event.

Dress-Up Story Time: Happy Halloween!

Spooky (but not too spooky) stories and craft activities for Halloween. Costumes very welcome–for kids and parents!

Suggested for ages 3 to 8, but all ages welcome. Free.

You may know Peter for his 2009 book The Curious Garden, which was featured on the cover of last year’s ABC Best Books for Children catalog.

The Curious Garden, as well as his next book, 2010’s Children Make Terrible Pets, have steadily been among the bestselling picture books at Spellbound for the last couple of years.

Many of you may have copies of Peter’s books at home that you have purchased at Spellbound or elsewhere. Please bear in mind, however, that a book signing without sales does not encourage publishers to send other popular authors to that store again.

For that reason, you are welcome to bring a book from home to be signed IF you also purchase one or more of his books at the event. Please help us to bring more popular authors to our store by making their appearances worth the time and expense.
